Happy (almost) New Year

My last two projects of the year. One privately commissioned piece, and one done for the University of Waterloo's School of Pharmacy (Digital Medication Management research). See ya 2015, it's been swell. On to new adventures in 2016!

Labour of love

In anticipation of a teary first day of school this year, I congratulated myself on my idea of adding a little note to my daughter's lunchbox to lessen the first week nerves I was sure would happen. I congratulated myself big time. Like I was solving the world's problems with a post-it and a Sharpie. What I didn't anticipate was my dry-eyed daughter happily waving goodbye. And then coming home to tell me she loved my note so much she had thought up a year-long project for herself which is completely dependant on a lunchbox note every day. EVERY DAY. So join me, won't you, over at my Instagram? I'm @lee.steph.lee and apparently I've entered into the longest contract ever. Some interesting things are bound to come out of this.

KWUSk in Stratford

This event was a good one. I'm not exactly sure what the above building is, but you can see it from the front window of the Revel Caffe while you sit in one of their super comfy chairs and drink a vanilla latte. Then Brenda and I sat by the water and I sketched her while we chatted, ate a sandwich, watched a tai chi group, and listened to a ukulele ensemble.

KWUSk at Rockway Gardens

While the big Urban Sketchers Symposium wrapped up in Singapore, our little group spent a few hours at Rockway Gardens in Kitchener. I remember this building used to be the Swiss Castle Inn and was one of the first 'fancy' restaurants I went to when I was younger. I was disappointed to see the Rockway Restaurant (and its amazing milkshakes) was also gone, but I helped myself get over the loss with some cheese bread and a brownie from the City Cafe Bakery down the street.

KWUSk at the Night Art Market

A small but mighty group of us KW Urban Sketchers met Downtown Kitchener this weekend to check out the Night Art Market. We sketched buskers and vendors and this amazing sand sculpture artist and then headed down the street to the opening reception for the July exhibit at The Art District Gallery. I tried out these new Prismacolor pens that a sketch buddy recommended and I'm so in love with them that I'm ditching my Copics and my Pigma Microns for them (for now, anyways).
Tools: Prismacolor pen, watercolour pencil
Snack: Williams Mango Raspberry Chiller and a chocolate chip cookie of perfection.

KWUSk in Cambridge

I spent some time this weekend with KW Urban Sketchers at one of my very favourite sketching spots in the area: Melville Cafe and the Musagetes Architecture Library in Galt. The cafe is cozy, has a great view and a delicious Tuscan pizza. The library upstairs has an even better view and these really neat benches and chairs to sketch at. Really well designed (as you would expect from a library at a school of architecture). Tools used: Prismacolor pens, watercolours. Snacks enjoyed: Tuscan pizza, a tasty London Fog, carrot cake with cream cheese icing.

KWUSk at Royal City Park

Out with KW Urban Sketchers today in Guelph at Royal City Park. Great weather, lots of geese, and really tasty things going on at The Boathouse Tea Room. Lemon tart and vanilla Rooibos tea, I'm looking at you.

Thanks, mom

Special delivery for my mom today. A gift  card for a restaurant she hasn't tried yet, and a little drawing of her childhood home that has just recently been torn down. Also, some of that amazing kettle corn (not pictured, already eaten) from those amazing Mennonite ladies at the Farmers Market.

Art District Gallery grand opening

It was party central at the grand opening of The Art District Gallery tonight. I stepped outside for some fresh air and a quick sketch and then ultimately, to try to help Nancy, Marion, Karen, myself, and some random strangers escape the underground parking lot when the pay parking machine broke down.

Woodside National Historic Site with KWUSk. And spiders.

Hanging out in the woods with KWUSk at Woodside National Historic Site in Kitchener. I'm giving the toned paper sketchbook another try, in the name of working outside my comfort zone. Also outside my comfort zone: the sizeable spider that crawled out of my sketch bag when I got home.

Nobody puts KWUSk in the corner

Ok, we put ourselves in the corner. Impromptu Starbucks meetup with a fellow KW Urban Sketcher. It was a pretty busy place, so we readily accepted the challenge of sketching from our little table wedged in the corner. Sharpie pen, watercolour pencil.

Great weather for a SketchCrawl last Saturday with KW Urban Sketchers in downtown Kitchener. No gloves needed! I don't want to get anyone all crazy, but I think it might finally be spring.

Wellington County Museum with KWUSk

It was really sunny last weekend but still needed the warm gloves on for sketching at the Wellington County Museum and Archives with KW Urban Sketchers. Micron pen, trusty Sakura gel pen, watercolours.

I'm pretty excited to be teaching an urban sketching workshop at Homer Watson Gallery. There are still spots left. All skill levels welcome. Come sketch with us! http://www.homerwatson.on.ca/adult-spring-programs-2015/

routine cards

I just finished up some routine cards for a little friend of mine who is, hands down, one of the cutest kids I've ever met. His mom and I have been friends forever and it was super fun to personalize these for him. I used watercolour, coloured pencil and Micron pen on watercolour paper. Each card is hand laminated so they can be written on with dry erase marker or taped up and repositioned when needed.

She&Me: Butterflies

A little butterfly snack station.

"This is the forest bridge. It's a secret bridge."
My daughter was super excited to come with me to the latest sketch event with KW Urban Sketchers at the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory. Once we were there, she literally sketched circles around me. She found what she liked, sketched it and moved on. I had to really bust out of my comfort zone by only having 15 minutes for a sketch before we moved to find something else to draw. Tons of stuff going on around us (Quails! Turtles! Giant fish! A waterfall!) and lots of people interested in what our group was doing.

Me: pencil, Micron pen, Cotman watercolors.
She: Crayola markers, crayon, glitter gel pen.
After-snack: chocolate milk, blueberry muffin, plain chips.

Last sketch of 2014

My last urban sketch of 2014 was a last minute decision to meet up with a friend over at the new courthouse in downtown Kitchener. We only had about an hour to sketch from up on the 6th floor before they kicked us out at closing time, but by then it was too dark to see anything anyways. See you, 2014!
