Craft table chaos

A quick sketch this afternoon of my girl's artistically unorganized craft table. Sharpie pen, coloured pencil.

She&Me: Actual Things

Lately we've been really into Drawing Actual Things. My little art director continues to remind me that she's been practicing Drawing Actual Things so she can come urban sketching with me again. She's getting pretty good. We drew frames of things and used some coloured pencils, both inspired by two of my KW Urban Sketchers buddies.

She: "I'm drawing that picture of you and daddy. See? It's in an ACTUAL frame and I drew an ACTUAL frame."
Me: Beloved stuffed rainbow dog and beloved girl with tongue sticking out.
Snack: Hot chocolate with two different kinds of marshmallows.

She&Me: Urban Sketching

My girl and I had a drawing date at a recent urban sketching event. We spread out our snacks and sketchbooks near the Elora farmers' market. Live music, interesting people to watch, and lots of friendly dogs to pet.

Me: Farmers' market, with added yellow coloured pencil suggested and supplied by her.
She: Rainbow, rainbow circle, super DUPER fast rainbow inspired by this video, and a rainbow heart.

Three amigos

I just finished a sweet little commission for the lovely Kara of Purple Door Photography. Not only did I have fun doing it, I got a very handy parenting tip. She wanted a drawing of her daughter's three favourite stuffies and she let me in on a little secret: each of these guys has at least one stunt double, just in case someone goes missing. Smart mama, that Kara. She's one of my favourite clients, so I added some bonus stickers of her super cute little girl. And some business cards, because a little self-promotion never hurts, am I right?

My aunt's weekend houseguest inspired a quick 15 min sketch today.

She & Me: Meta edition

Things are getting interesting. The kid is getting smarter. This time she wanted me to draw her drawing as she was drawing it. And chastised me if I fell behind. Or used the wrong colour. And just to make things more interesting, I had to keep up with the complex story that went along with her project.

She: This is a big city and right beside it is the grass and the hot sand. It's very, VERY super hot and you'll burn yourself. You can walk through the hot sand to the foot washer and wash your foot and your hands and your self. The pink is a dryer. You break your feet off and put them in the dryer, then you put them back on.
Me: Wait. You break your feet off?
She: [gives me a moment to consider my own ridiculous and obviously ignorant question before answering slowly] Yes. You BREAK YOUR FEET OFF. Then you PUT THEM BACK ON.

Crackers and Cheese

While Little took a nap, Big and I had our usual art/snack time and I got a drawing done for the KW Urban Sketchers March sketch challenge "Sketch Your Lunch". She likes to control the art supplies and I gladly let her. It's a win win situation: she gets a switch from someone telling *her* what to do and I get a different drawing challenge every time. Today I was allowed a pencil, a grey marker and some blue washi tape. I snuck in a white Sakura gel pen while she was out of the room.

She & Me: Work In Progress

Me: Drawing of the corner of the living room, as part of KW Urban Sketchers "Sketch Your Home" challenge. Total time: about 3 half-hour increments over the past 3 days.

She: The Epic Craft continues. There was no more room on the paper, so she started building upwards. Total time: every waking moment of the past 3 days. And I'm pretty sure she crept down to work on it while everyone else was asleep.

She & Me: Craft Box Bonanza

Me: Drew her until she told me to stop and "draw something outside instead". Moved on to a sketch of our snowy backyard for KW Urban Sketchers February challenge. She originally supplied me with a purple Crayola paint marker ("but not the other colours") and a caramel scented ballpoint pen, but eventually took pity on me and handed over a white crayon and the rest of the paint marker set.

She: Used everything in the art supplies box to make The Ultimate Craft.

She & Me: Washi tape, construction paper, princess crayons

Me: Quick sketch of the corner of the playroom for KW Urban Sketchers Feb challenge "Sketch Your Home".
She: Designed, illustrated and bound her own colouring book. No big deal.

Waiting room

Super long wait at the only Lifelabs office open this long weekend. I got lots of good drawing time in. Inspired by a fellow KW Urban Sketcher who sketches everywhere from church to symphony, I have my little book with me and challenge myself to draw wherever I am, especially if there are a lot of people around.

Beautiful mess

Drawn for the KW Urban Sketchers Feb 2014 "Sketch your Home" challenge. Not afraid to admit there are some glaring issues in technique going on here due to the fact that Harry Connick Jr. was on American Idol in the background.

She & Me: oil pastels and washi tape

Me: Ugh. I hate oil pastels.
She: This is a beautiful rainbow. It's behind the trees here. When the rainbow sinks into the trees, the apples come out.

Someone needs some quiet time and a better attitude, and for once it's not the four year old.
