Tiny cottage, big memories

For my mom's birthday, I gave her a drawing of her childhood family cottage. I've never seen the place in person but I used a few photos as references and I can't believe that 8 kids, 2 adults and a dog all fit into this tiny building. I bet there were good times had here. And probably also some punching, noogies and BUT MOM! HE'S ON MY SIIII-IIDE!

Edit: My mom just called, laughing her ass off after reading this. Apparently this is the boathouse. This makes a lot more sense. I'm still betting, however, on the punching and tattling. There were 8 kids. It's not a magical boathouse.

WorldWide SketchCrawl #40

I did some drawing today with my local sketching group as part of International SketchCrawl #40. As I was drawing the clock tower, I noticed some sketchers across the way that looked like they were from my group. They were too far away for me to have time to pack up my stuff and hobble my pregnant self over there, so I sketch-stalked them instead. It wasn't as creepy as it sounds -- I let them in on the secret when we met up later.

Park people

Inspired by my talented and fearless buddy Megan and her daughter, and encouraged by the equally talented and fearless Donna, I decided to finally take on the challenge of drawing people in public today. Sat myself down at a playground and quickly learned the people NOT chasing after kids were the easiest to draw. There were a surprising amount of people sitting around texting or just staring off into space, lost in their own thoughts. So, fortunately, I don't think anyone even noticed me. Mission accomplished.

Draw Yourself(ie)

This is my entry for Doodlers Anonymous' Showcase #19: Draw Yourself(ie). The prize up for grabs is a $250 gift card for Michael's, so the kid and I are pretty excited about the possibility of a future art supplies shopping spree. If you like what you see, come vote for me. If I win, I'll buy you a little something.

YawnFest 2013

Being pregnant this time around means I spend a bunch of time hanging out in doctor's offices and medical labs. Upside: lots of free time to draw. Downside: I haven't worked up the nerve yet to draw people when they're sitting right in front of me, so I'm stuck with reception desks and tables full of magazines as subjects. This particular lab was just as boring as it looks, so thankfully I had my dad along to chat with and liven things up as I waited.

Niagara Falls, ON. There were all these red and blue tour buses lined up at this terminal below our hotel room window, like 10 in a row, and it looked pretty cool. I started out leisurely drawing it, taking my sweet old time, enjoying the sun on my face...until the buses started pulling out of the terminal all at the same time and I had to wrap things up super quick.

Hooray! New business cards! I ordered them from and I love them so much I'm having a hard time giving them away. You can customize these minicards with your own designs or choose from one of their designs and they have these little pocket sized minicard cases, too, that I may have accidentally also purchased. Like the kind of accidental that's not accidental at all, but more like deliberately adding something to your cart because you were offered a slight discount and you're a sucker for cute things in clever packaging.

Family portrait

I was recently asked to do a drawing for the lovely and talented Kara of Purple Door Photography and it was honestly one of the most fun projects I've ever worked on. Also, when I got the resource photos, I was surprised to find how photogenic her entire family is. I'm not sure that one family should be hogging all the attractive people. It's not fair to the others.

Urban sketching at the park

I'm a member of a local urban sketching group and today's outing landed me at a playground. I had grand ideas of hanging around longer to also get in a couple of other climbing thingys, some trees, and these geese behind me that were honkhonkhonking the whole time I was there. But it was pretty chilly out and I was NOT dressed appropriately (mom: you were right, happy mother's day), so I hightailed it back to my warm car after drawing just the slide.

Best F@%*$! Jam Ever

My cousin Chris makes a kickass strawberry jam. And every year, even if we haven't seen each other for months and months, I manage to score a jar. He makes his own labels too, and you guys -- the labels do not lie.
